{"id":245,"date":"2023-11-17T08:17:16","date_gmt":"2023-11-17T08:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aiopentext.itd.cnr.it\/aiforteacher\/chapter\/gdpr-in-a-nutshell\/"},"modified":"2024-01-31T08:12:21","modified_gmt":"2024-01-31T08:12:21","slug":"gdpr-in-a-nutshell","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/aiopentext.itd.cnr.it\/aiforteacher\/chapter\/gdpr-in-a-nutshell\/","title":{"raw":"GDPR in a nutshell","rendered":"GDPR in a nutshell"},"content":{"raw":"<p class=\"no-indent\">The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into effect on 25th May 2018, provides a legal framework for keeping everyone\u2019s personal data safe by requiring companies to have robust processes in place for handling and storing personal information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\">The GDPR is based on seven principles and establishes rights for the citizens and obligations for the platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\">GDPR\u2019s seven principles are: lawfulness; fairness and transparency; purpose limitation; data minimisation; accuracy; storage limitation; integrity and confidentiality (security); and accountability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\">Let us mention some of these rights and obligations, particularly relevant in our context:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>The right to be informed <\/strong>specifies that a citizen has to be informed of the usage which can be made of their data;<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>The right to erasure<\/strong> is what allows a citizen whose data has been collected by a platform to ask for their data to be removed from the dataset built by the platform (and which may be sold to others);<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>The right to access<\/strong> means that the citizen can know (easily) what data is being collected about them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"no-indent\">Even if the GDPR was written before the main questions about AI and education became important, the framework does address a lot of issues about data., Since data is the petrol AI thrives on, GDPR is particularly relevant for AI and education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\">Rather than giving our own easy-to-understand explanation on what GDPR is and what a teacher should understand, let us recommend looking at a website that has done this simplification work for us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\">The name of the website, of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberties.eu\/en\/stories\/gdpr-for-dummies\/44076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.liberties.eu\/en\/stories\/gdpr-for-dummies\/44076\">\"GDPR for dummies\"<\/a> may irritate you (teachers are not dummies).
